Scope and Content Information

These papers consist of three separate collections, chiefly correspondence and genealogical research concerning the Weisiger family and the "Pocahontas Cameo Brooch," ca. 1909-1957, ca. 15 items. The "Pocahontas Cameo" was made of Pocahontas when she visited England in 1619, and was brought back to America by her husband, John Rolfe, and their infant son. The cameo was handed down through the granddaughter of Pocahontas to the Bolling family and subsequently came into the Weisiger family through Anne Meade Bolling Weisiger.

Accession 5398, the "Pocahontas Cameo," was loaned to the Library by the Reverend Cary N. Weisiger III, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 19, 1956, and was photographed and returned.

Accession 5398-a consists of correspondence concerning Weisiger genealogy and the "Pocahontas Cameo," 1923-1924 and 1945-1957, and a genealogical report about the Weisiger Family by the Genealogical Bureau of Virginia, and was loaned to the Library by Cary N. Weisiger, Jr., "Pocahontas," Ivy, Virginia, on November 14, 1956. Correspondence includes the provenance of the "Pocahontas Cameo" (1923 Jan 16 and Apr 11) and letters of Roswell S. Page, Charles M. Langhorne, Eleanor Duncan Shannon, and Elizabeth West Weisiger Whitelaw.

Accession 5398-b consists of a single letter, December 7, 1909, from William Bolling Weisiger to his son, Colonel Cary Nelson Weisiger, Sr., concerning the building of "Pocahontas," an estate on the James River in Goochland County, Virginia, and family history, and was loaned to the Library by Cary Nelson Weisiger, Jr., on January 26, 1957.
