This grant was given to the University of Virginia Library on January 22, 1960, by Mrs. James Lewis Hook, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Scope and Content Information
This collection consists of a land grant, April 30, 1787, to Michael Gratz (1740-1811), and signed by Virginia Governor Edmund Randolph for his service during the Revolutionary War. The grant was for 28,000 acres in Fayette County, [now] Kentucky, lying along the Big Sandy River. Michael Gratz was a merchant of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in partnership with his brother forming B. & M. Gratz. During the Revolution, Michael Gratz moved to Virginia where he proved very helpful in securing supplies for the colonies.
