Acquisition Information

Professor Atcheson L. Hench of the University of Virginia's Department of English presented this collection to Alderman Library in 1953. The vast majority of this material represents Professor Hench's purchases from Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Wood, Charlottesville antique dealers in the 1940's and 1950's.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of the correspondence, receipts, deeds, indentures and writes of various unrelated Virginia families, ca. 5,000 items, with a date range of 1776 to 1939 but with the majority of material from the years 1830 to 1890. They were collected by Atcheson L. Hench, a professor in the Department of English at the University of Virginia and a student of etymology and word usage. A few of the families and localities represented are the Davis, Henderson, Henson, Martin, Robertson and Sutherland families of Orange, Madison, Louisa, Nelson, Albemarle and Fluvanna counties.

The subjects of the correspondence are diverse, including migration westward, courting customs, education, the Civil War, and agricultural and economic conditions in Virginia, the "New South," and the West. The collection contains many deeds and receipts from the early nineteenth century and thirteen nineteenth century scrapbooks, albums, record, and cyphering books. The medical casebook of Dr. Thomas Smith, 1815- 1849, is of special note. This collection would be of interest to students of central Virginia history in particular and Southern society in general.
