Acquisition Information

The collection is the gift of Miss Margaret Gray of Martha Jefferson House, Charlottesville, Virginia, given on March 14, 1979.

Scope and Content Information

This collection consists of letters from Arthur Bowers of Liverpool to Margaret Gray of Charlottesville, Virginia. Miss Gray apparently met Mr. Bowers during World War I, while he was serving in the British armed services. Although the letters span both World Wars, very little regarding the wars is mentioned, with the exception of a note in Miss Gray's diary at the time of the British declaration of war in 1914. Also included in the collection are letters from other soldiers to Miss Gray in her diary, from a 1914 trip to England, a genealogical sketch of Jean Pierre Sioussat and Charlotte Julia De Graff (electrostatic copy), and a poem written by Margaret Gray.
