These letters were given to the Library to Randolph Kean of Springfield, Virginia, on August 17, 1984, and bear no restritions.
Scope and Content Information
This collection comprises three letters, 1865-1866, from Charles G. Talcott to Robert Garlick Hill Kean (1828-1898) and a printed circular letter dated February 7, 1866, from Matthew Fontaine Maury, Imperial Commissioner, Office of Colonization, Mexico, enclosed in Talcott's February 17, 1866, letter. These letters discuss: the large numbers of ex-Confederate soldiers living in Mexico, the conditions of the country and the opportunities of employment for railroad men and engineers; farming opportunities, especially in regards to coffee; Maury's printed circular which encouraged emigration to Mexico; and Talcott's own situation in Mexico as an engineer.
