Acquisition Information
These memoranda books were obtained by the Library's Rare Book Department from Heartwood Books, Charlottesville, Virginia on February 9, 1987.
Scope and Content Information
These items are two memoranda books belonging to Mattias Fix of Augusta County, Virginia, ca. 1821-1826.They consist of leaves sewn together at the middle and are entitled "Matthias Fix Book Sept 1821" (ca. 1821-July 15, 1822) and "Matthias Fix Book Nov 1st 1825" (November 1825-October 6, 1826). Each contains entries on various transactions involving Fix, chiefly his purchase of various items on account. Items mentioned include: beads, butter, buttons, chocolate, coffee, indigo, iron, nails, powder and lead, ginger, suspenders, tobacco, and whiskey. Calico, cambric, cotton, lace, muslin, ribbons, rice, shoes, steel knives, table linen, and tea were among other miscellaneous items purchased by Fix.
The only other named individual, John Randolph, was also resident of the county. A receipt, probably in his hand, acknowledges Fix's payment of $23.15 on August 8, 1822.
Fix was mentioned by name in Virginia census returns of 1820 and 1830. In the former, he and his wife and child are listed; in the latter the family had apparently grown to eleven persons comprising nine children, his wife, and himself. He was not listed in subsequent censuses.
