Acquisition Information
Alan Cheuse of Fairfax, Virginia, placed his papers on loan to the Library on on October 22, 1987. The papers were purchased by the Library on September 11, 2003.
Scope and Content Information
These additional papers of Alan Cheuse consist of ca. 500 items (3 Hollinger boxes, 1 linear foot) 1980, 1983-1986, and undated, chiefly personal and professional correspondence. The collection also includes printed materials, book reviews, and three short stories by Cheuse, "Daughters of the Eighties," "Nights on the Cumberland Plateau," and "The Tennessee Waltz."
A few of the correspondents include: Michael Mewshaw (June 24, 1984); Esther Cohen of Adama Books (August 3, 1984); Dale Richardson (August 17, 1984); George Garrett (September 9, 1984; January 27, April 16 & 23, and June 20, 1985; March 1 & 22, April 3 & 30, 1986; and undated); Herbert Gold (October 1, 1984); James D. Houston (April 11, 1985); Bernard Malamud (May 28, 1985); William Holinger (July 23, 1985); William Kennedy (October 7, 1985; and February 24, 1986); Jonathan Yardley (October 24, 1985); Robert Draper (October 1, 1985; and January 3, 1986); and Jon Manchip White (November 30, 1984; April 10, 1985; January 8 & 23, and April 2, 1986).
Subjects in the correspondence include: Norman Lear (August 17, 1984); religious beliefs and politics (August 17, 1984); North American Transcription Service and Deutsche Welle (October 13, 1984); a description of life in Cologne, Germany (October 13, 1984); Cheuse's reviewing for National Public Radio (October 24, 1984); an anecdote concerning Katherine Anne Porter at Robert Frost's birthday party (December 5, 1984); Anne Sexton (February 25, 1986); and Bernard Malamud and his death (March 20, May 8, May 14, and May 19, 1986).
The folder of printed material has a notice of the memorial service for Bernard Malamud (May 17, 1986) and several notices of public readings given by Alan Cheuse.
