Historical Information

The Lindsey Funeral Home opened circa 1886 in Rural Retreat, Virginia. In 1982 it merged with the Wytheville based Barnett Funeral Home and operated under Lindsey family management. In 1985, it joined the Highland Funeral Service, operating as a branch in Rural Retreat.

Scope and Content

The Records consist of photocopies of death certificates filed by staff between 1947 and 1961 for persons who resided in Wythe and Smyth counties. The Records are arranged alphabetically in two volumes.

Volume 1 contains death certificates for surnames from Anderson to Luttrell and numbers 164 pages. Volume 2 contains certificates for surnames Luttrell (Samuel Lee Luttrell) to Yonts and is numbered from page 165 to 268. An index to each volume provides page numbers for each certificate.

The death certificates usually provide researchers with the name of the deceased, place of death, date of death, cause of death, age, place of birth, date of birth, and spouse. Other information may include names of father and mother, name of informant, physician, sex, race, marital status, occupation, cemetery, date of burial, and location of cemetery. Original death certificates are housed in the Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics, in Richmond, Virginia.
