Custodial History

Alan Pisarski received the papers from the Barsony family and mailed them to Jonathan Gifford at George Mason University in July 2013. Jonathan Gifford then sent the papers to Special Collections and Archives in July 2015.

Biographical Information

Steven A. Barsony worked as the Director, Office of Engineering in the Federal Transit Administration, Department of Transportation. One of the most important projects he worked on at FTA was the Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit Project in West Virginia. Prior to joining the federal government, Barsony worked for over 10 years for the Boeing Company in Seattle, Washington. A native of Hungary, Barsony received a law degree from a university in Budapest. He also held engineering degrees from a university in Prague and the University of Buffalo in New York. He died on October 9, 2012, at the age of 88 in Lake Barcroft, Virginia.

Scope and Content

This collection of papers documents the work of Steven A. Barsony during his time with the Department of Transportation. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1970s and 1980s. The collection largely consists of speeches, reports, correspondence, and photographs on mass transit projects, particularly new technology developments such as the Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit Project in West Virginia. Some of the speeches and congressional testimonies were written by authors other than Barsony.
