Scope and Contents
Journal (9 in. x 14 1/2 in.) of James E. Royal during his term as Worshipful Master (head officer) of the St. John's Lodge No. 24 of Shinnston, West Virginia. The journal records meetings, events, and activities held by the lodge, including lists of officers and attendees. Newspaper clippings and programs regarding lodge activities have been pasted into the journal. The ledger contains 300 pages; of these, pages 1-149 and 214-223 have been used; there is also a newspaper clipping attached to the final page.
St. John's Lodge No. 24 was officially chartered as a Masonic Lodge in 1868 with meetings having begun the previous year under the auspices of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia in Wheeling. The lodge is still active as of 2018.
